The wife of Rear Admiral Ameen Ikioda, the Moderator at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, near Jos, on Sunday escaped an assassination attempt by an unknown person during a church service at Apapa, Lagos.

Ikioda, the immediate past Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, was said to be currently away on an overseas tour with course participants.

The Director of Naval Information, Commodore Kabir Aliyu, who confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone in Lagos, however, could not immediately provide details of how the incident happened.

Similarly, the Area Commander, Area B Police Command, Apapa, ACP Ali Mohammed, whose men rushed to the scene, also confirmed the assassination attempt on the officer’s wife right inside the church.

Mr. Mohammed said the suspect walked straight into the church and stood behind the woman but before he could perpetrate the act, he collapsed.
The area commander explained that it was at that point that worshippers apprehended the suspected assassin and later took him to a nearby hospital where he confessed that he was sent by some people to kill the woman.

Mr. Mohammed said the police were unable to take statement from the suspected assassin before he was moved to the Navy Barracks, Ojo, following a directive from the naval authorities.

He said that policemen were prevented by the worshippers from having access to the suspect.
