The 12 lucky skydivers jumped out just in time.
A small plane crashed in the neighborhood of Taylorville, Illinois, late Saturday morning moments after 12 parachutists jumped safely from the plane.
The pilot died in the accident. The local news media reported that the wreckage of downed twin-engine Beechcraft 18 were scattered across two or three blocks.
"There were plane parts everywhere," said Gloria Johnson, 61, who was unloading groceries from his car when the plane plummeted.
Relatives identified the pilot of the plane as Brandon Scott Sparrow, 30, an aviation enthusiast for a long time and aircraft mechanic. Sparrow got married and went to school at Western Illinois University and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, reported the local news media.
Brandon and Angela Sparrow had no children. Sparrow was hit by a truck while cycling in Carbondale, six years ago, family members told the news media.
He was in a coma for a while after the accident, but despite the serious injuries, he was able to climb back into the cabin of the aircraft, they said.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident which took place about 90 miles northeast of San Luis.
